Cemetery

The Hemphill City Cemetery is located at the South end of both Oak Street and Texas Streets in Hemphill.  In 2007, the City of Hemphill City Council voted to take over the ownership, management and maintenance of the City cemetery from the former Hemphill Cemetery Association, which was then defunct with most prior members deceased and the rest unable or unwilling to continue as a viable association. Some information regarding the cemetery and individuals interred there can be located at the following link:  https://sites.rootsweb.com/~txsabine/burials/index.htm.

City workers maintain the cemetery throughout the year by mowing, weed-eating, spraying weed-killer and other needed maintenance throughout the year.  The City is not responsible for the upkeep of the individual monuments and headstones, as this is the responsibility of the family members or other interested individuals.

If you wish to purchase a plot in the Hemphill Cemetery, you will need to fill out a Cemetery Plot Purchase Application Form, which can be located by clicking on the link below.

The fee for each plot is currently $350.00 per plot.  This amount is subject to change if/when the city council updates the list of fees.  Plots may be paid for in advance or may be paid for and obtained upon the death of an individual.  The City does not currently have a map of the cemetery or available plots.  Our advice is to purchase grave markers, if you plan to prepay for plots.  When plots are purchased, you will be issued a receipt for the number of plots purchased, which will indicate who purchased the plot and who is intended to be interred in the plot.  You will also be given a copy of your completed Cemetery Plot Purchase Application Form.  Although, the City keeps a record of this, we also suggest that you keep this with your important documents as proof of your purchase.  We also suggest that you have your grave markers placed and that you check on them from time to time to be sure they are clean and visible to ensure that no one else is buried in that place.

The City hopes to eventually map the cemetery and place a map online and at the entrance of the cemetery.  We also hope to make improvements to the cemetery as funds are available.  The City is working to expand the cemetery and to also put another entrance/exit on Highway 87 South.

The City also takes donations for cemetery improvements, maintenance, management and expansion.  Donations can be made at City Hall at 211 Starr Street, Hemphill, TX 75948, at Bank of Montgomery (BOM) 101 Worth St., Hemphill, TX 75948, or donations can be mailed to the City at the following address: City of Hemphill, Attn: City Secretary/Accountant, PO Box 788, Hemphill, TX 75948.

All donations are greatly appreciated as they will help our cemetery be maintained in a respectful and esthetically pleasing manner.
